LAST MINUTE PREPARATION FOR CET

TThe II PU/XII Board exam is behind us and a series of entrance tests are lined up for students aspiring to take up Engineering, Medicine and Pure science courses. The CET exam is one such exam conducted by the KEA for admissions to various professional colleges in the state. In this period between the Board and CET Exam, it is quite natural for a student to be stressed out and feel underprepared. But all might not be lost. Instead of throwing in the towel, one needs to take up the challenge and come out successful. Here are a few tips to be followed in the run up to CET 2021.

  • Revision is the key: Time is ticking and every aspirant will feel the anxiety of not knowing some concepts. This anxiety will only result in one losing motivation. Hence, this is not the time to start a new topic and prepare from the scratch. Rather, one should brush through the topics and focus on fine tuning the skills required. The mantra for success in these competitive exams is “minimum material maximum revision”.
  • Prioritize: Do not cram too many things at this stage. Identify chapters and concepts with a higher weightage and scope for scoring marks.
  • Improve on your strengths:Identify topics over which you have good command and strengthen it further. 100% preparation on 80% of topics is any day a better strategy than 80% preparation of 100% of all topics.
  • Focus on your weak points: Make use of this period to plug all the loopholes in your preparation and convert your weakness to strength.
  • Emphasis on NCERT:CET Exam is based on the NCERT curriculum. Reading the NCERT textbook cover to cover would be a herculean task as this juncture. Hence glance through the book and concentrate on important formulae, examples, diagrams and graphs. Review summary notes and synopsis rather than full notes. Make concept maps for quick and effective revision.
  • Do not neglect I PU topics:Though weightage for I PU topics in CET is around 25 to 30%, one should not completely neglect I PU topics. High success rate in I PU questions ensures top ranks in CET.
  • Make the best use of practice papers: In all competitive exams time management is a crucial factor. Students are therefore expected to solve these practice papers in a time bound manner in exam simulated conditions. Practice papers provide an opportunity to improve speed and accuracy, the two essential components for success in entrance exams. It is also important to carry out self-evaluation and analysis of the performance in practice papers. Previous years CET papers give you a hint of the type of questions to expext.
  • Seek guidance:A problem shared is a problem halved. Do not hesitate to consult your teachers and peers for a quick help in some concepts rather than trying to figure it out yourself.
  • Break the monotony: Slogging too much at the last minute will take a toll on your health. It is therefore important to take regular breaks, listen to music, practice yoga or meditate.
Exam Eve

Materials to be taken to the exam hall (admit card, stationery items etc) to be kept ready the day before the exam. Stay positive, keep calm, eat well, keep yourself well hydrated and get a decent night’s sleep.

The D-Day

Wake up early and get ready to reach the venue on time. Keep distractions at bay and turn off technology. Do not give any space for negative thoughts and be confident about your preparation.

Those 70 minutes!

  • Fill all the necessary details in the OMR sheet
  • The CET paper will be a combination of easy, moderate and difficult questions.
  • In the first sweep solve only those questions which are familiar and easy. Usually these are memory and fact based questions and numericals involving direct substitution.
  • In the second sweep solve those questions which are familiar but would take more time. This usually includes questions which are multiple concept linked, multiple topic linkedand lengthy numericals.
  • The third round is for those questions for which you have no clue. As there is no negative markingin CET, one can be a bit adventurous in answering those questions making intelligent guesses.
  • If a question appears tricky at the first sight, skip it and proceed to the next one.
  • Darken the circles in the OMR sheet for the questions you have answered confidently then and there itself. Do not postpone this to the very end.
  • Try to explore the process of eliminationof options to arrive at the correct choice wherever possible. Try to link units in data and in options.
  • Be alert with graphs-coordinates, units, sign conventions and vector related questions.
  • Numbers would be user friendly and hence do not panic when you come across numerical based questions.
  • Be very cautious with questions involving words and phrases like incorrect, not true, ascending and descending order.
  • Assume you have 60 minutes and not 70 minutes.
